Eftir að verslunarbandinu var aflétt eftir 1786, segja munnmælin að reist hafi verið verslunar- eða vörugeymsluhús í Seyðisfirði en áður þurftu menn að versla á Eskifirði eða Vopnafirði. Sagt er að Hafnarbræður hafi löngum átt í brösum við verslunarmenn og fara af því ýmsar sögur.
