Jens Gudesen er født den 6. maj 1819 i Kielstrup, Ove sogn. Hans moder døde 1842. og hans fader længe før. Hun var omtrent 100 år gammel. Sine historier har han bort rundt omkring, også i krigens tid har han lært en del som soldat, men hverken fader eller moder har fortalt for ham.
